Printing Goes Centerstage

With printing going hand in hand with cutting edge technologies like cloud computing, it is no more a backside application and is now taking centerstage for all the IT heads.

Today printers are not just confined to a printing job but have different capabilities and applications attached with it.

Today printing devices are more commonly known as MFPs (Multi Function Printers). Not to forget the new-age twists like MPS (Managed Printing Services) or the still-crowning-head of Printing-on-Cloud which we have started witnessing in form of Google Cloud Print or HP’s menu for the Web. The latest forecast of this exciting and dynamic market came in form of Gartner’s Printer Market Forecast – India that sketched some interesting trend-watch.

Almost all the global vendors have increased focus in Tier-2 or Tier-3 cities. Even government segment buying, especially in the last quarter of the year has increased the growth. The reason for this growth is that though the market is moving towards digitization, India is still in a nascent stage. Business would remain cautious with spending and still the enterprise professional segment would see growth.

The Printer market in India is forecast to grow at a measured pace through 2013 – the compounded annual growth rate CAGR (2009-2014) of End User Spending is forecast at five per cent. Gartner estimates the Indian Printer market will grow into a $0.7 billion business by 2014.

There is an increased demand for MFPs, single function printers. Canon, Ricoh etc are pushing hard and prices will dip. Experts believe that serial Inkjet will also grow, albeit at a lower rate of six per cent in 2010. Demand will be driven by the consumer segments in India as small and midsize businesses increasingly adopt lower-priced serial inkjet MFPs.

Worldwide, the uptick of MFPs would depend on maturity level. The maturity in other parts is higher than in India due to many reasons. These products have many nuances, like how to increase productivity or how to integrate with workflows etc. Mid-market segments still don’t have that kind of execution maturity. A lot of push from vendors could be possible, and adoption is growing. However it’s still nascent.

The DMP Market Scenario
When it comes to Dot matrix segment, Epson maintained its number one position in the market when it came to DMPs (51 per cent) and POS printers (55 per cent). This was followed by 22 per cent growth in the serial DMP business and 27 per cent in flatbed Inkjet devices, where it captured the second position with 31 per cent market share. It also focused on consolidation of channel partners for its entire range of products. The company launched three all-in-one new printers and aimed at the home user and SOHO segments plus launched India's first six-inch bill printer LQ-50 for the retail segment.
Once a predominantly DMP focused organisation, Chennai based TVS-E is now a diversified IT peripherals player, with an aggressive focus on the POS market. In FY '10, it formulated strategic alignment with application software development partners to offer an entire array of retail solutions for textiles, pharmaceuticals, restaurants and grocery stores. Moving forward, experts close to the industry strongly feel that India’s strength towards burgeoning retail segment will ensure better growth prospects for the DMP market in the coming months.

Print Spends gets affected by IT Budgets – Says Gartner

The revision in IT budgets towards the end of the fiscal year 2010 led to controlled purchasing of print devices and IT hardware spending. However, the future outlook is positive.

The combined serial inkjet and page printer, copier and multifunction product (MFP) market in India totaled 6,65,172 units in the first quarter of 2011, a 2.5 per cent decline  compared to the first quarter of 2010, according to Gartner, Inc.

HP has maintained its leadership position and remained the leader in the India printer, copier and MFP market, as its market share totaled 56.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2011, followed by Canon with 21.7 per cent market share, Epson at 7.5 per cent, and Samsung with 6.4 per cent market share.

In the A4 MFP space, HP maintained its leadership position at 65.7 per cent market share, followed by Canon with 15.7 percent, Samsung with 6.1 per cent and Epson with 5.2 per cent market share in the first quarter of 2011.

In the A3 flatbed copier MFP segment, Canon led the market with 24.6 per cent market share, followed by Toshiba with 21.9 per cent, Ricoh with 12.5 per cent, and Sharp with 11.9 per cent market share compared to the first quarter of 2010.

The page printer market declined 14.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2011. HP continued to dominate the segment with 48.3 per cent market share, a 6.6 per cent increase from the first quarter of 2010. Canon’s market share totaled 36 per cent, a 13.6 per cent decline. Samsung recorded a decline of 52 per cent, but it accounted for 11 per cent market share in the Indian page printer market

Cloud Driven Printing

Applications supported by Google Cloud print currently include Gmail for Mobile, Google Docs for Mobile and Chrome OS, and will expand to include third-party apps.
Printing and storage giant Hewlett & Packard has already announced that Google Cloud Print users can print directly to HP ePrint-enabled printer from any mobile or desktop application that supports Google Cloud Print.

A multi-function device is more preferred than a single-function device due to the decreasing price gaps and lesser space. The same does not hold water for laser based technology. Adding to this, the single-function mono laser devices are increasingly used in the transactional printing segment where dot-matrix printers are used traditionally. This is largely due to its better print quality, cost and printing speed.

Home and SMBs are the important segments for inkjet printers. With the surge in sales of digital cameras, photo printing is picking up and thus the use of photo printers in the home space is registering an uptrend.

Cartridge price is the key concern for inkjet devices. For the SMB segment, cutting down on the running cost is at the top of the mind, thus vendors are coming up with technological innovations to bring down the printing cost. Epson came up with ME (max economy) series catering to the corporate and offering low ink cost in the form of ME 143 ink. Similarly, market leader HP came up with the concept of e-printers.

Canon, focusing on the home segment, came up with models that have better aesthetics; one of their newly announced model, MG 8170, has the feature of full HD movie prints.
